극장 개념의 확장과 사이트의 재편 양상 - 퍼포먼스 디자인 관점에서

Abstract

기술 매체의 발달과 함께 수반되는 현실 환경의 변화는 지각 인습과 이를 제어 관리하는 시스템에 대한 성찰을 촉발하며, 예술 프로덕션과 수용 전반에 영향을 끼쳐왔다. 극예술에 있어 수행성과 몸성의 부상은 의미를 전달하고 경험하는 방식의 직접성을 부각시키며, 몰아적 관중에 머물렀던 관객의 위상을 참여자로 격상시키고 있다. 프로덕션과 수용 체계의 관계 또한 매체 환경의 변화 속에 끊임없이 재정의되면서, 보는 방식과 보여주는 방식 또한 복합 다중화 되고 있다. 본 연구는 기성 극장 공간과 시스템이 어떠한 양태와 논리로써 유용되며 쇄신되고 있는지의 동세대 현황을 ‘퍼포먼스 디자인’의 관점에서 포착해 논하였다. 본고에서 표본으로 선별 제시한 작업들은 매체 실험으로서 ‘다원 예술’이나 미술과 공연 예술의 ‘사이’ 상태를 넘어, 기성 시스템의 재구성과 재배치 작업을 통해 융화되며 형식화 단계로 진일보하고 있다. 여기서 on/off, front/back 스테이지를 가르는 구획선의 논리를 따라 위계를 이루던 극장 공간은 ‘극장 상황’으로 전치되면서 시스템 사용 방식은 갱신된다. 이러한 경험적 현상의 기저에는 원기능을 다한 도심 속 근대산업 시설물과 영역주의에 저항해온 사이트 예술을 사회 관계망 세대의 감성으로 재편해내고 있는 기성 예술가들이 있다. 시각 예술가와 공연 예술가들은 기존의 제도권 체제하 각자의 정체성을 유지하면서도 유무형의 자원을 공간적으로 공유함으로써 서로의 외연을 확장해내고 있다.

Postulating the performance design as frame work, this paper aims to examine how conventions of theater space are being displaced, repurposed and renewed in the so-called era of trans-media. Crossing over on/off, front/back stage, the collaborative acts of theater-making are dynamically explored and reconfigured within each production situation. Here, the preconceived delineation between black/white box, creator/spectators, production/reception, arts/non-arts, leisure/work, private/public, real/virtual etc. are dissolved and its spatial-role linkage redefined: art production as a set of protocols or an apparatus performs as a communal platform for the participant in search of sense of belongings and solidarity. In this contexts, the production participants as system users or players are postulated as collective actors who unveil, unstabilize, deterritoalize and redistribute hegemony of any given site. Here, The very culture of user oriented social networking and sharing becomes the driving force of the exformation and reformation of the socio-spatial reality.
