A Qualitative Study on Adult Students' Learning Experiences in Higher Education

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the learning experiences of adult students in college. In order to understand how they had adapt to college life and what their unique ways of learning were, the study conducted in-depth interviews with 20 adults aged between 30 and 50. Most of the participants pointed out that they learned to develop autonomous learning strategies and to interact with others in order to adapt as adult students. The participants indicated the importance of learning from experience in order to develop their own learning strategies and using the internet, as it provided various learning resources and expanded their social networking. Another important learning experience was to interact with others since having dialogue with others enhanced their studies and expanded or transformed their thinking. It was also important for the participants to get support from other adult students as they went through difficult times as adult students in college.

본 연구는 대학에 입학한 성인학습자들의 총체적인 학습경험을 고찰함으로써 대학에 적응하기 위한 학습경험과 학습전략을 탐색하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구에 참여한 20명의 성인학습자들은 25세 이상의 나이로 대학에 입학한 성인들이었으며, 대학에서의 학습경험을 그들의 시각에서 이해하기 위하여 면대면 심층인터뷰를 실시하였다. 인터뷰를 통해 수집한 자료는 코딩작업을 통하여 52개의 기술어를 도출하였고, 2개의 중심주제와 5개의 하위주제로 분류하여 분석하였다. 연구에 참여한 성인학습자들은 대학에 적응하기 위하여 지속적인 행동과 성찰의 학습과정을 통하여 대학입학 이전의 사회경험들과 대학 입학 후의 학습경험들을 복합적으로 연계시켜 자신만의 학습전략을 개발하였다. 또한 인터넷은 다양한 학습자원을 자율적으로 이용할 수 있게 하는 유용한 도구로 활용되었으며, 학습자원을 자유롭게 공유할 수 있는 공간임과 동시에, 나이에 제한 없이 다양한 사람들과 소통할 수 있는 통로로 활용되기도 하였다. 대학 내 다양한 구성원들과의 상호교류 역시 중요한 학습전략으로 인식되었는데, 동료 학생들 및 교수님들과 적극적으로 대화함으로써 학문적인 역량 향상과 더불어 자신의 관점을 전환 혹은 확장시킬 수 있었다. 특히, 대학에 입학한 동료 성인학습자들과의 관계형성은 학문적, 사회적 네트워크를 확장시키는 것은 물론, 그들로부터 물리적 혹은 감성적 도움(소속감, 안정감)을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로, 대학이라는 낯선 환경에 적응하기 위하여, 성인학습자들은 그들의 독특한 경험과 그들을 둘러싼 다양한 사람들과의 상호교류를 통하여 그들 나름대로의 학습전략을 개발하는 것이 중요하고, 이들을 대학의 한 구성원으로서 정착시키기 위해서는 다양한 대학교육의 기회를 제공할 수 있는 정책적, 제도적 기반을 마련하는 것과 동시에 성인학습자들의 고유한 경험과 요구가 반영된 교육과정, 내용, 방법, 학습 환경 등을 제공해야 한다.
