- Abstract
- The world container handling business is rapidly transforming. Global port operators such as HPH, PSA, ATMP and P&O Ports, are extending their business scope to the global scale to cope with the changing shipping and port environment over the recent decade. They attempt to make more profits while taking advantage of economies of scale and enhancing service quality by adapting to the strategies of horizontal and vertical integration. The former strategy is to expand their businesses to more diversified regions and the latter is to extend their service scope integrating logistics functions in the supply chain. As the result, the concentration of port operators is prevailing by making direct investment in foreign terminals and undertaking strategic alliances with shipping lines and logistics corporations. This paper reviews the global strategies of the global port operators highlighting the unique aspects of the their globalization process and motivations.
The results of this research will provide a useful insight into the port industry, more specifically business behaviour of global port operators.
