Abstract
This study included in the analysis were for 2,150 children and their families participating in the Panel Study on Korean Children (KICCE). Latent growth curve modelling was used to examine intercepts and slopes for parenting stress, parenting behavior, eating habits and sleep duration, by examining correlations over time, and by fitting unconditional and conditional models. Parenting behaviors did not change over time however, parenting stress and children’s eating habits and sleep duration changed and showed a consistent pattern: parenting stress decreased and children’s eating habits changed. Sleep duration time reduced as children grew older. The full model demonstrated that children’s eating habits were influenced by parental behavior and stress. The correlations between the children's sleep duration, parenting stress and parenting behaviors were not significantly influential. Children’s eating habits are influenced by parental behaviors. Parents may require support through early parenting education. Children's good eating habits are important from an early age. It is vital to provide effective parental intervention programs so that parents have this important knowledge. Children’s sleep duration was not influenced by parental behaviors in these analyses. More research is needed to investigate other factors of children’s basic living habits, such as hygiene, manner and self-restraint. In addition, this study only investigated sleep duration. The findings might have been stronger if the study had also included measures of sleep quality. This should be addressed in future studies. Good sleeping and eating habits optimize preparation for a child to have a healthy life.
