- 乾嘉時期, 考據學獨覇一時, 然至晩季國勢漸衰, 漢學弊病亦隨之浮現. 此際數家力圖總結其時其學, 或主漢學, 或主宋學, 或主折衷, 然始終未脫門戶之見. 惟章實齋一人, 以客觀治學精神, 毅然嚴厲批判其弊病, 其ꡔ通義ꡕ實爲箴砭當時經學而作. 當時通儒盡遭章氏痛駁, 其中對戴東原尤甚矣. 章氏欲別瑕而擇其瑜, 又懼‘譽者旣非其眞, 毁者亦失其眞’, 而摘戴氏‘心術不正’･‘飮水忘源’, 以及誇張訓詁･名物･典章制度之作用爲其瑕也; 而列戴氏深見古人大體, 理學文章發前人所未發者, 不泥墨守師說, 重視心得等爲其瑜也. 或曰章氏批判戴氏偏於貶, 此說未允, 實褒亦不少, 可謂知東原者實齋矣!
