조직연구에서 실용주의 시각의 적용 가능성: 질적 방법과 양적 방법의 혼합을 중심으로

Abstract

조직연구에서 단일 방법론에 대한 집착은 조직 실제의 다측면적인 본질(multifaceted nature)을 이해하기에는 매우 불충분한 시각만을 제공하고 있을 뿐이다. 본 논문의 목적은 조직 현상에 대한 보다 종합적인 접근을 위한 대안적 방법론으로서 상이한 연구방법론간의 결합가능성을 검토하는 것이다. 이는 이질적이고 양립불가능한 것으로 여겨지는 방법론들이 하나의 연구 내에서 결합되어 관심 연구주제에 대한 다양한 시각들을 도출하는데 융합적으로 이용될 수 있음을 의미한다. 본 논문에서는 조직 현상에 대한 연구를 진행하기 위해 방법론적 혼합 또는 결합을 시도하는 과정에서 발생될 수 있는 쟁점들을 중심으로 논의를 전개하였다. 이러한 논의는 조직연구에서 혼합방법론의 적용가능성을 탐색함은 물론 그 이론적 토대를 강화하는데 기여할 것이다.

This paper extends the discussion of a pragmatic approach in organizational research through a presentation of the concept of mixed-methodology. It addresses important issues that may arise when applying mixed-methodology in organizational research and discusses how it contribute to a deeper understanding of organizational phenomena.In doing so, this paper reviews the paradigm wars and incompatibility thesis and discusses the fundamental principles of mixed methodology. In order to apply it in organizational research, this paper suggests three major types of mixed-methodology designs. By using mixed-methodology, the researcher could decrease the deficiencies and biases that stem from any mono-method creating the potential for counterbalancing the flaws or the weaknesses of one method with the strengths of another.
