- Abstract
- There has been a rapid increase in housing price over the last 10 years in Korea. The length of time it takes for people to buy first house received great attention from the public as it has widened the gap in wealth between homeowners and renters. The purpose of this study is to analyze the behavior of home buyers in the 10 wave Korean Labor and Income Panel Survey. The time to purchase a home for the first time after the marriage was modelled using the longitudinal statistical method. The univariate version of survival analysis, the Kaplan-Meier method was used to test whether there were any socio-demographical and locational differences in terms of first-time buying timing. In addition, Cox's proportional hazards regression model was carried out to find out the factors that influenced the period. The empirical evidence revealed that factors such as the white-collar jobs, full time working, high income are more likely to shorten the time. The time taken to buy first home did not show a significant difference between Seoul Metropolitan area and the other regions despite a hug price gap.
