- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among the English-learning motivation of high school students, the socioeconomic status of their parents, and their residential area. The participants in this study were 227 boys and girls at academic high schools in Seoul. The findings of the study were as follows. First, in terms of the socioeconomic status of the parents, the occupation of the mothers made a significant difference in the ideal second-language (L2) self of the students. There were significant gaps among the students in intrinsic motivation and ideal L2 self according to the academic credential of their mothers. The monthly mean family income made a significant difference to their ideal L2 self, but no significant gaps were found according to the occupation and academic credential of the fathers. Second, out of the four factors of the English-learning motivation of the students, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation exerted a positive influence on academic achievement. Third, when the students were classified into two groups according to residential area (Gangnam and Gangbook), a significantly stronger intrinsic motivation was found among the Gangbook residents than their counterparts. These findings illustrate that maternal role is important for education.
