- Abstract
Due to the characteristics of social enterprise, social entrepreneurs face ‘dual-goal paradox’ in which they should pursuit social values as well as economic demands. However, academic research on the paradoxical components of social entrepreneurship still remains quite insufficient. This study attempted to investigate how social entrepreneurs actually define social entrepreneurship. Further, it analyzed how social entrepreneurs perceive the trade-off between social values and corporate values. For this, it compared differences in the definition of social entrepreneurship between preliminary social entrepreneurs and certified social entrepreneurs. This study found that most of the preliminary social entrepreneurs recognized only the elements related to the pursuit of social value as a component of social entrepreneurship, while the certified social entrepreneurs emphasized that social enterprises should pursue social and economic values at the same time. The results provided important implications not only for the practice of social entrepreneurship but for research on social entrepreneurship.
