- Abstract
- The current research has been conducted to investigate the effect of environmental variables such as gender and region in middle school students' achievement in English. The regional variable was categorized as 'Seoul', 'Large-Size Cities', 'Medium-Sized Cities' and 'Rural area'. The subjects of the research were 3399 3rd year middle school students from 88 schools and this meets .5% of the total population in Korea. The test was developed through establishing national curriculum-based standards in order to obtain content validity. The standards were further used as the basis for establishing critical performance level. The critical performance level was developed in order to assess whether students' performance in English are 'Advanced', 'Average', 'Minimum' and 'Underachiever'. The effect of gender and regional variables were analyzed with regard to four critical performance levels. The result shows that female students outperformed the males students in all regions. With regard to the regional variable, the achievement of the rural area students was significantly lower than the students in the cities. Further research is required to delineate the factors influencing students' achievement in English.
