Abstract
Grounded theory, which has recently gained popularity in the social sciences, can be an excellent method for providing empirical support for system dynamics research. Several efforts have been made to integrate grounded theory and system dynamics for this purpose. However, previous integration attempts have primarily focused on system dynamics and have not incorporated the paradigm model of Strauss and Corbin, widely used in the social sciences. This paper introduces ‘grounded system theory (GST)’, aiming to integrate systems thinking and the grounded theory approach by Strauss and Corbin. The grounded systems theory approach involves open coding, axial coding, and loop coding. The application of ‘grounded system theory’ was discussed by utilizing interview data on ‘the dilemma of artificial intelligence’. The ‘grounded systems theory’ proposed in this paper presents a systematic procedure for using qualitative data to construct a causal loop diagram, thereby serving as a bridge between grounded theory and system dynamics.
