공학 전공 선택의 성별 격차 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 한국 사회에서 STEM 분야의 성격을 가장 잘 반영하고 있는 공학 계열에 주목하여, 공학 전공 선택에서의 성별 격차를 측정하고 그 설명 요인이 무엇인지 탐색한다. 고등학교 2학년부터 대학교 1학년 시기 동안의 관찰 가능한 모든 설명 요인들을 망라적으로 분석에 포함하였고 추가적으로 대학 위계를 고려한 분석을 수행하였다. 한국교육고용패널Ⅱ(1-4차) 자료를 활용하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여성이 공학 전공을 선택할 확률은 남성에 비해 약 30%p 정도 낮으며, 관찰 시기의 다양한 통제변수들은 이러한 성별 격차를 거의 설명하지 못하고 있었다. 둘째, 공학 선택에 대한 성별 효과는 대학 위계에 따라 큰 차이를 보였는데, 상위권 대학에 비해 비상위권 대학에서 성별 격차가 더욱 크게 나타났다. 상위권 대학에서는 성별 격차에 대해 모든 요인의 설명력이 거의 나타나지 않은 반면, 비상위권 대학에서는 다양한 요인들이 성별 격차의 일부를 설명하고 있었다. 이러한 결과는 성별 전공 분리 완화를 위한 정책적 개입의 대상과 시기에 대한 구체적 함의를 제공한다.

This study aims to examine the gender gap in college major selection with a specific focus on engineering majors as representative of STEM fields in Korean society. By analyzing a comprehensive set of observable factors from the second year of high school to the first year of college, alongside considering college selectivity, we aim to identify the factors contributing to this gender gap. Using data from the Korean Education & Employment Panel II (Waves 1-4), the results are as follows. First, women are about 30%p less likely than men to choose engineering majors, and the explanatory power of various variables at the time of observation for this gender disparity is found to be minimal. Second, the gender effect on engineering major selection varies substantially by university selectivity. The gender gap is more pronounced in non-selective universities compared to selective universities. While all factors exhibit limited explanatory power for the gender gap at selective universities, the factors explained some of the gender gap at non-selective universities. These results hold important implications for policy interventions aimed at reducing gender segregation in college majors, particularly in terms of determining the optimal targets and the timing for interventions.
