- Abstract
- In the wake of the recent upsurge in the number of nuclear, single-parent, low-income, multicultural, and double-income families, various sectors of society are looking to afterschool care in elementary school as a means of providing safety and education to families struggling with childcare. However, although afterschool programs provide for physical activities on paper, in reality afterschool care does not integrate any physical education programs. Thereby, this study aims to take a look at four basic directions that physical education programs in afterschool care should take, and set out attainable goals upon a review of the options and realities on providing physical education programs in afterschool care. Focus groups, expert meetings, literature reviews, and in-depth interviews were part of this research. Focus group consultations were held with elementary school teachers in charge of after-school activities, teachers specializing in physical education, and researchers specializing in elementary physical education. In-depth interviews were conducted with elementary physical education experts and practitioners. Building on a preliminary rough draft, a final draft of the guideline on physical education programs in elementary afterschool care was drafter upon expert meetings. This guideline provides an outline for safe physical education programs that can foster creativity and character, and recommendations on programs first and second grade students, and third and fourth grade students, respectively.
