BL 웹툰의 스토리텔링 전략 연구 - <야화첩>의 향유 요소를 중심으로 -

Abstract

본고는 전문 플랫폼을 중심으로 위상이 높아진 BL(Boys’ Love) 웹툰의 스토리텔링 전략을 탐구하기 위한 것이다. 최근 드라마 <시맨틱 에러>의 성공으로 BL 웹툰의 스토리텔링과 IP(Intellectual Property) 활용 전략의 연구 필요성이 대두됐고, 이는 성애 묘사 외에 복합적인 BL의 향유 요소가 있으며 그 다양성에 주목할 필요가 있음을 보여준다. <야화첩>은 BL로서는 드물게 조선시대를 배경으로 하고, 뛰어난 작화와 노골적이고 진한 성애 묘사로 연재 초부터 화제를 불러 일으켜 BL 향유자뿐만 아니라 BL이라는 장르를 모르던 이들에게도 그 존재를 알렸다. 이에 본고에서는 <야화첩>이 어떻게 BL 웹툰으로서의 장르적 특성을 전략적으로 활용하고 기존 BL 웹툰과 차별화함으로써 대중성을 획득했는지, 스토리텔링 전략을 분석했다. <야화첩>의 주요 스토리텔링 전략은 서사와 연동된 원색적이고도 강렬한 성애 묘사의 다양화와 전형성과 극단성의 이율배반적 캐릭터성이다. 서사적인 면에서 <야화첩>은 강한 성애 묘사를 전면화하면서도 성애와 탐미를 강조하는 BL과 추격과 긴장이 고조되는 스릴러라는 이질적인 성격의 두 서사를 결합하고, 두 캐릭터의 감정 변화에 따라 성애 묘사를 다양화했다. 캐릭터성 면에서는 느슨한 삼각구도를 형성하는 연모의 장과 연계된 권력의 장을 효과적으로 활용했다. 새롭고 강력한캐릭터들의 등장에 맞서 어떠한 장벽도 극복하고야 마는 BL의 전형적인 캐릭터성을 극단으로 치닫게 함으로써 몰입을 강화한 것이다. IP 확장 가능성을 지닌 원천콘텐츠의 중요성을 감안할 때, <야화첩>뿐만 아니라 장르적 특성을 반영하는 BL 웹툰의 스토리텔링 전략 탐색은 앞으로도 꾸준히 필요한 작업이다.

This article aims to explore the storytelling strategies of Boys’ Love (BL) webtoon, which has grown in popularity on specialized platforms. The recent success of the drama <Semantic Error> has raised the need for research on BL webtoons’ storytelling and IP (Intellectual Property) utilization strategies, showing that there are complex elements of BL enjoyment other than depictions of sex, and that it is necessary to pay attention to their diversity. <Painter of the Night> is set in the Joseon Dynasty, which is rare for BL, and its excellent writing and explicit and deep depiction of sexuality have generated a buzz from the beginning of the series, making its existence known not only to BL fans but also to those who are not aware of the genre. In this article, we analyze the storytelling strategy and how it gained popularity by strategically utilizing the genre characteristics of BL webtoons and differentiating itself from existing BL webtoons. The main storytelling strategies of <Painter of the Night> are the diversification of colorful and intense depictions of sexuality linked to the narrative and the characterization of the duality of typicality and extremity. In terms of narrative, the webtoon combines two disparate narratives, BL, which emphasizes sexual love and desire, and thriller, which emphasizes chase and tension, and diversifies the depiction of sexuality according to the emotional changes of the two main characters. In terms of characterization, the webtoon effectively utilized the power field in conjunction with the love field to form a loose triangle. By pushing the typical characterization of BL to the extreme, the audience is forced to overcome any barriers against the emergence of new and powerful characters, strengthening immersion. Given the importance of source content with the potential for IP expansion, it will continue to be necessary to explore storytelling strategies for BL webtoons that reflect the genre’s characteristics as well as those of <Painter of the Night>.
