Ion transport in the liquid crystal and its effect on the change of DC offset voltage in a reflective microdisplay

Abstract

The ion motions in the LC cell, flicker, and image sticking phenomena have widely been investigated. The built-in potential in the reflective LC on Si cell exists due to the work function difference between the Al and the ITO layers. In order to eliminate flicker due to the built-in potential, the DC offset voltage should be applied. Ions move through the electric field in the LC cell. Applied DC offset voltage should be changed to minimize the flicker. This is because the change of the ion concentration according to the stress time makes the electric field variable. In this poster, we present the change of DC offset voltage with the ion motion and the charge screening effect.
