- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to test the possibility of preventing dynamic knee valgus and safe methodsof weight bearing by measuring the gluteal muscle activity and the dynamic Q-angle while performingtransformed single leg squat. Test subjects ware 15 healthy male (age 20~29). Three types of squats:Single Leg Squat (SLS), Dumbbell Single Leg Squat (DSLS), Cane Single Leg Squat(CSLS) were performed atrandom orders to each subject. The difference between static Q-angle and the Q-angle after performingone of the three types of single leg squats in addition to the muscle activities of gluteal medius (GM) andgluteal maximus (GMAX) were compared. The results showed that there was significant difference betweenstatic Q-angle and the three types of single leg squats (p<.001) and DSLS and CSLS showed moresignificant difference than SLS (p<.01). Comparing the muscle activity level of GM during each single legsquats, GM did not show significance (p>.05), and comparing the muscle activity level of GMAX duringeach single leg squats, GMAX did not show significance as well (p>.05). This study showed that theQ-angle increased when one performs single leg squat compared to the static state, and DSLS and CSLSreduced the dynamic Q-angle compared to SLS. In addition, in light of the lack of difference in GM andGMAX muscle activity levels while performing single leg squats, single leg squats was able to act as aweight bearing exercise that effectively modifies knee valgus in the transitional period from non-weightbearing to weight bearing exercise and further prevent PFPS by reducing the amount of stress producedat patellofemoral joints.
