- Abstract
- The main purpose of this research is to review articles on listening in the journal of English Teaching in commemoration of its 40 years of history. A total of 55 listening-related papers have appeared in English Teaching. The researchers investigate these listening papers from various perspectives: the historical trends in listening research, the main topic area of the paper, the research subjects' levels of proficiency, the research methodology. This study reveals that topic areas are pretty much skewed, most articles being on assessment and strategy. Papers on assessment and strategy have been written a lot, while the papers on news are only two. Many listening researchers have utilized college or university students as their research subjects. As for research methodology, quantitative methods have been used far more than qualitative ones. This research will provide a bird's-eye view of listening research in Korea for the past 40 years to those who are interested in this field of study.
