- Abstract
- Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 8-1, 21-49. This research examines patterns of interactions between college students using a synchronous computer-mediated communication tool, a chat program. The 20 participants were paired to form 10 dyads. These pairs worked together on six tasks: two decision-making, two ordering a picture sequence, and two free discussion tasks. To investigate pairing proficiency's effects on the amount of both language use and the negotiation of meaning, statistical analyses were performed. The results show that there are no significant differences between similar language proficiency pairs and different language proficiency pairs. To investigate the contents of interactions between participants in detail, a qualitative analysis of the chat script was undertaken. The qualitative analysis of this study suggests: 1) delayed negotiations of meaning occur in CMC tasks; 2) negotiation of meaning is not a strategy that participants are predisposed to employ when they encountered non-understanding; 3) students use other strategies in interactions, such as self-correction.
