- Abstract
- This study aims to investigate educational environments to enhance English language education in the public school contexts. The researchers reviewed documents on English language teaching (ELT) policies and conducted a survey. A total of 746 participants were selected nationwide: 346 English language teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools, 165 professors and administrators majoring in ELT, and 235 parents. The findings are as follows: (1) Diverse ELT programs and activities are being implemented after class or during vacation, (2) various types of English language classes are conducted by Korean and native English teachers separately and/or cooperatively, and (3) specific policies concerning English language teachers and the educational and socio-cultural environments are required. Based on the results, some pedagogical suggestions are presented for the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST), the regional boards of education, and English language teachers.
